Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail Summer Promotion 2009 now underway

FRANKFORT, Ky. – With the arrival of Memorial Day, the 2009 travel season is officially underway – and so is the 2009 Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail Summer Promotion, a 16-week campaign in honor of our 16th President.
From now through September 6, one site along the Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail will be highlighted weekly. Each Saturday, the first 16 visitors to the designated site will receive a special Lincoln-related prize such as a hat, mug or other items commemorating the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth. Visitors this past Saturday kicked-off the promotion at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park in LaRue County, where Lincoln was born February 12, 1809.
As part of the promotion, visitors also have the opportunity to participate in the Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail Passport Program. Start by acquiring a passport map at any Lincoln site or participating Kentucky Interstate Welcome Center, then collect a customized passport stamp from each site visited. Once 10 stamps from any 10 sites are acquired, trailgoers can visit www.kylincolntrail.com to register what sites they visited and when. They then become eligible for the grand-prize drawing for a gift basket worth $200 – in celebration of Lincoln’s 200th birthday – which will take place in conjunction with the Labor Day holiday.
New this year, welcome centers in Bullitt County, Christian County, Florence, Franklin, Grayson, Horse Cave, Paducah, Shelby County and Williamsburg will be passport stamp locations with a special customized stamp proclaiming “Welcome to Kentucky, Birthplace of Abraham Lincoln 1809-2009.”
The Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail is a scenic driving trail across central Kentucky highlighting historic sites that in some way shaped the Lincoln legacy and influenced the president throughout his life. Each site is an opportunity for visitors to see and learn first-hand about the Kentucky places important in the life of Lincoln, his family and friends. The trail is a project of the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office in partnership with the Kentucky Historical Society, Kentucky Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, Kentucky Department of Travel and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

May 30: Kentucky Historical Society at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, Frankfort
June 6: Two locations – Lincoln Homestead State Park and downtown Opera House, Springfield
June 13: Mary Todd Lincoln House, Lexington
June 20: Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park and National Cemetery, Jessamine County
June 27: Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, Perryville
July 4: Kentucky Welcome Centers (10 prize locations)
July 11: Farmington Historic Plantation, Louisville
July 18: Ashland: The Henry Clay Estate, Lexington
July 25: Old Fort Harrod State Park, Harrodsburg
August 1: Kentucky State Capitol, Frankfort
August 15: Judge Joseph Holt House (stamp site - Breckinridge County Courthouse)
August 22: Whitehall State Historic Site, Richmond
August 29: Sarah Bush Johnson Lincoln Memorial Cabin at Freeman Lake Park, Elizabethtown
September 4: The Lincoln Museum and Lincoln Statue, Hodgenville
